Tree symbolism and wandlore in Harry Potter

해리와 볼드모트가 "쌍둥이" 지팡이 심을 공유하고 있다는 사실이 좀 이상하게 느껴질 수는 있다(불사조의 깃털-두 지팡이 모두 폭스의 깃털임) 하지만 이 두 캐릭터는 많은 공통점들을 가지고 있다. 해리가 볼드모트의 호크룩스로서 연결되어 있었다는 점-두 사람 모두 파셀통그를 할 수 있다는 유사점이 생기게 한-은 별도로 치더라도, 그들은 굉장히 비슷한 방식으로 자라났다. 둘 다 모두 머글 손에 자라난 고아였으며, 수 년간 자신들이 마법사라는 사실을 모른 채 자라났다-그리고, 피브렐 가문의 가보를 소유하고 있었으니 아마 먼 혈연관계일 것이다. 그들의 차이점을 이해하기 위해서는, 그들의 지팡이가 무슨 나무로 만들어져있는지 살펴보는 것이 도움이 될 것이다.

볼드모트의 지팡이에 쓰인 주목이란 나무는 독을 가지고 있는 나무이다. 나무의 모든 부분에는(열매는 제하고) 인간에게 치명적인 alkaloids가 함유되어 있다. 주목처럼, 볼드모트는 수없이 많은 희생자들을 살해하였고, 그의 믿음인-순혈우월주의 또한 그처럼 유해한 사상이다. 

주목의 한 가지 흥미로운 특징은, 나무가 죽고 나서도 독성이 남아있다는 것이다. 이와 비슷하게, 볼드모트의 호크룩스들과 죽음을 먹는자들은 볼드모트가 고드릭 골짜기에서 "사라진" 이후에도 지속되어 인간들의 마음을 오염시키고 삶을 파괴해왔다.

해리의 지팡이도 크게 다르지 않았다. 호랑가시나무는 행운과 번영, 악으로부터 주인을 보호하는 전통적인 상징이다. 호랑가시나무는 역사적으로 로마의 Saturnalia 페스티벌, Pagan winter Solstice, 크리스마스 등의 축하(celebration) 의식에 사용되어온 나무이다. 호랑가시나무처럼, 해리는 볼드모트라는 형상을 한 악을 물리치고 마법사 세계를 celebration으로서 하나로 묶어내는 존재이다-마법사들이 축배하는 "살아남은 소년"

Elder (딱총나무)

"오직 아주 드문 사람만이 엘더나무와 완벽한 상성을 이룬다. 그리고 이런 페어링이 이루어지는-아주 드문 상황에서는, 확신하건대, 그 마녀나 마법사는 아주 특별한 운명을 타고 난 것이다."

엘더나무는 드루이드교(켈트족) 신화에서 아주 흥미로운 역할을 한다. 엘더나무의 신성한 열매는 치유하는 힘을 가지고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 마법세계와의 연결을 뜻한다고 믿어져왔다. 엘더나무를 베거나 불태우는 행위는 어머니신을 분노하게 만들고 그녀에게 복수 당할 행위로 간주되어왔다. Wiccan Rede 로부터 발췌한 다음 문장을 보라: '엘더는 숙녀의 나무라네, 감히 불태운다면 저주뿐이지!' 전설의 딱총나무 지팡이-엘더완드는 그 지팡이를 만들기 위해 엘더나무를 벤 순간부터 저주받은 물건이 되었을 것이다.

이런 축복과 저주의 예시로는 알버스 덤블도어를 들 수 있을것이다. 수 년 동안이나 엘더완드를 소유하고 있었던 그 인물. 덤블도어는 그야말로 축복받은 재능을 타고 태어난 인물이었지만, 또한 그만큼 비극적인 가족사의 저주를 받은 인물이기도 하다. 그가 힘을 오남용하는 행위의 위험(dangerous of abusing power)을 이해하게 되자, 엘더완드는 그의 소유가 되었다. 엘더완드는 강력한 물건이기도 하지만, 잘못 사용되었을 때는, 그의 소유자를 타겟으로 삼는다. 덤블도어의 특별한 운명은 다른 이들을 부패와 타락으로부터 보호하기 위해 그의 지혜를 활용하는 것이었다.

ELM(느릅나무)

"오직 순혈 마법사만이 느릅나무 지팡이를 사용할 수 있다는 근거없는 믿음은, 분명히 느릅나무 지팡이를 사용하는 어떤 마법사들이 그들의 혈통을 증명하기 위해 부단히 애써왔다는 사실로부터 시작했음이 틀림없다."

느릅나무는 한 때 영국 전원을 지배하였던 나무이며,  2천만년 이상 된 종으로 추정된다. 느릅나무는 오래되고 강력한 혈통을 상징하므로, 느릅나무 지팡이가 자기 가문에 자부심을 가진 마법사들이 갈망하는 지팡이라는 것은 딱히 놀라운 사실이 아닐 것이다. 루시우스 말포이의 지팡이-이후에 볼드모트에게로 넘어간-가 그랬다. 

안타깝게도 느릅나무는 몇가지 부정적인 연관성을 가지고 있는데, 특히 죽음과 질병에 대한 것이다. 느릅나무는 한 때 관을 짜는데 사용되었으며, 예고없이 죽은 가지들을 떨어뜨리는 것으로 알려져있다. Dutch Elm 병이 돌았을 때 느릅나무는 지구상에서 거의 멸종될 뻔 하였고, 곧 부패와 붕괴의 자랑스러운 상징이 되었다. 이는 루시우스 말포이의 몰락을 반영하며, 그의 몇가지 믿음들-머글에 대한 그의 태도같은-것들이 속부터 썩어있는 것임을 제시하는 장치이다.

크기와 길이를 고려해보면, 오크나무는 힘과 생존의 상징이라 할 수 있다. 오크나무는 수많은 곤충, 새를 비롯한 생물들에게 식량과 안식처를 제공해주는, 그 어떤 영국 나무들보다도 다양한 생명들의 쉼터라 할 수 있다. "키가 크고, 강하고, 동물들의 친구" 라는 말을 들었을 때 우리가 떠올릴 수 있는 인물은 누구일까? 물론, 루베우스 해그리드일 것이다.

그의 피지컬 사이즈와 힘은 아주 명백한 비교점이며, 잠시 이 비교는 묵혀두더라도, 해그리드는 수많은 곤경속에서도 놀랄만한 인내심을 보여왔던 인물이다. 그는 가족과 친구들을 잃었고, 학교에서 퇴학당했으며, 아즈카반에 수감되었었고 한평생 그가 거인혼혈이기 때문에 겪었던 수많은 편견을 마주해왔다. 하지만 그는 "생존자"이다. 그의 오크나무 지팡이는 부러졌지만, 해그리드의 영혼과 의리마저 파괴할 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없었다. 

확실히, 어떤 분홍 우산 안에서는 그 어떤 조각들도 없을 것이다.

It’s no accident that certain characters wield certain types of wands.

Like so much in the Harry Potter books, symbolic meaning can be found in the smallest of details. By looking at folklore, the properties of British trees and Garrick Ollivander’s personal notes, we see how a wand reflects its owner’s personality and fate.

‘It’s really the wand that chooses the wizard, of course.’

Yew and holly

It might seem odd at first that Harry and Voldemort share ‘twin’ wand cores (phoenix feathers, both taken from none other than Fawkes), yet these characters do have a lot in common. Aside from Lord Voldemort's connection to Harry as a Horcrux, giving them forced similarities such as the power of Parseltongue, they grew up in similar ways. They’re both orphans raised by Muggles, both unaware they are wizards for years, and – as they own Peverell family heirlooms – probably blood-related. To understand their key differences, however, look no further than their wand woods.

The wand of yew is reputed to endow its possessor with the power of life and death.

Yew, the wood used in Voldemort’s wand, is poisonous. Every part of the tree (aside from the berry flesh) contains alkaloids that are fatal to humans. Like the yew, Voldemort brings death to many victims, while his beliefs, such as pure-blood supremacy, are equally toxic.

One interesting property of yew is that it remains poisonous after the tree has died. Similarly, Voldemort’s Horcruxes and Death Eaters linger on after his demise at Godric’s Hollow, poisoning minds and destroying lives.

Holly wands often choose owners who are engaged in some dangerous and often spiritual quest.

Harry’s wand could not be more different. Holly is a traditional symbol of luck, prosperity and protection from evil. It’s been used in celebration rituals throughout history including the Roman festival of Saturnalia, the Pagan Winter Solstice and, of course, Christmas.

Like holly, Harry repels evil in the form of Voldemort and unites the wizarding world in celebration as they toast ‘The Boy Who Lived’.

Elder

Only a highly unusual person will find their perfect match in elder, and on the rare occasion when such a pairing occurs, I take it as certain that the witch or wizard in question is marked out for a special destiny.

Elder trees have a curious role in Druidic mythology. These sacred plants were believed to possess not only healing powers but also a link to the magical world. Cutting an elder or burning the wood was believed to anger the Mother Goddess and provoke her to seek revenge. This is a line from the Wiccan Rede: 'Elder is the Lady's Tree, burn it not or cursed ye be!’ It’s possible the legendary Elder Wand was cursed from the moment its wood was cut.

These instances of blessings and curses ring true with Albus Dumbledore, who holds the Elder Wand for many years. Dumbledore is gifted with immense talent but equally cursed by a tragic family past. Once he understands the dangers of abusing power, the Elder Wand comes into his possession – it’s a powerful instrument which, when misused, quickly turns its owner into a target. Dumbledore’s special destiny, it seems, is to use his wisdom to protect others from corruption.

Elm

The unfounded belief that only pure-bloods can produce magic from elm wands was undoubtedly started by some elm wand owner seeking to prove his own blood credentials.

Elms once dominated the English countryside, and the genus is estimated at 20 million years old. Elms symbolise a long and powerful lineage, so it’s unsurprising that their wands would be desirable to wizards who take pride in their family heritage. Lucius Malfoy owns one such wand, which is later surrendered to Lord Voldemort.

Unfortunately elm has several negative associations, particularly death and disease. Elm trees were once used to build coffins and are known to drop dead branches without warning. Dutch elm disease has wiped out millions of these trees worldwide and turned a once proud symbol into one of rot and decay. This echoes Lucius Malfoy’s fall from favour and suggests that some of his beliefs – such as his attitude to Muggles – might also be rotten at the core.

Oak

A wand for good times and bad, this is a friend as loyal as the wizard who deserves it.

Due to their size and longevity, oak trees have come to symbolise strength and survival. Oaks support more life forms than any other British trees, with each one providing food and shelter to hundreds of bugs, birds and other critters. Who do we picture when we think ‘tall, strong and a friend to animals’? Rubeus Hagrid, of course.

Apart from the obvious comparison with his physical size and strength, Hagrid has shown remarkable endurance throughout many hardships. He’s lost family and friends, and has been expelled from school, imprisoned in Azkaban and suffered a lifetime of prejudice due to his half-giant heritage. But he’s nothing if not a survivor. His own oak wand may have been broken, but nothing can break Hagrid’s spirit and loyalty.

Speaking of which, the pieces would definitely not be found inside a certain pink umbrella.
